Florida based fetish and bondage photographer Lochai has a deep, sensitive and emotional connection to his work. As a master Shibari rigger, he expertly crafts his scenes with a balance of intimacy, seduction and beauty. It doesn't hurt that he's also a self-proclaimed "polite pervert." We spoke with him about being a regular photographer and voyeur at some of the country's premiere fetish events, his passion for tying up beautiful women and how he captures it all through his lens.

Eros Zine: How did your interest in and knowledge of Shibari develop?

Lochai: When I was six years old, the girl next to me on the school bus was trying to tickle me. All it was doing was pissing me off since I am not ticklish! I took my belt off and asked her if I could put it over her arms. She said yes... [grin] and that was it! I knew from that moment on I was "different."

Later on in life, I took up rock climbing and learned how to safely bind and suspend bodies. I was also a member of my high angle rescue team when I was a firefighter, which again allowed me to fulfill my kink in public.

I formally took up the study of Shibari when I joined The Eulenspiegel Society in New York and found out that there were others just like me out there. I was fortunate enough to have met Midori shortly thereafter, and she became a huge influence and mentor to me.

EZ: How often do you offer Shibari sessions and what are they like?

L: If there is a willing body and a length of rope at hand, then I am good to go. Since I am a photographer and rope artist, I have two modes: one as shooter, the other as rigger. I find it difficult to really get into my top space if I need to be concerned with lighting, camera angle, etc, so I usually tie and shoot first.

If my model/bottom is really getting into the sensations of the rope, I go into my creative mode of shooting, and the images become more raw and real. In private, I only tie and play with those I choose to play with. Many times sex has nothing to do with the play. Other times..... [wink]

I also give workshops for my local S&M group as well as being a primary instructor at Shibaricon, the only international Shibari convention.

EZ: It sounds like you've always had a lot of artistic inspiration and creativity. When did you begin turning your lens towards the erotic?

L: I got into photography as a child with my uncle as well as in school, making pinhole cameras. After my girlfriend bought me a new 35mm camera, I started shooting nudes of her in the woods near my home. I was 17 at the time and have been shooting ever since. I got my degree in graphic design with a minor in photography and had the key to the darkroom. Enough said.

EZ: You have two Master's degrees, one in graphic design and one in art education. How do you make your living?

L: I am a full time realtor.... Go figure. Anyone want to buy a home in Florida?

EZ: No kidding! You shoot a fair amount of black and white. How do you decide whether or not to shoot color?

L: Since I shoot all digital now, I don't have to make that decision beforehand. I shoot everything in color and choose the best way to display it afterwards. I usually spend just as much time converting my images to B&W as I do working them up. Some images just have more impact in B&W. But I find that many times, color is the only thing going in an image. For me, if it strikes me in B&W, then it is a great image. Not to say that I don't love my color work, but color needs to compliment the composition, not overpower it.

EZ: Where do you find your models?

L: I happen to be very lucky. We have the Fetish Factory here in Fort Lauderdale, which has some of the most beautiful fetish-minded women working there. I have befriended all of them through my relationship with the owners as well as being one of the official photographers for their Alter Ego parties. Once I shoot one of them and produce images that both my model and I like, the word goes around and the models come to me. During the parties, the beauties come show off their beautiful bodies and sexy clothing.

When I travel, I put out a call on different websites, and local models who like my work contact me. This past weekend I had a gallery opening in NY and worked with three beauties who all contacted me: Madison Young, Erika Kole and Mish Va de Vil.

EZ: What kind of relationship do you develop with them? Do you have any muses?

L: I tend to work with women I would like to be friends with, so I have a very good relationship with most. Since I am in the scene, many of them were, are or want to be play partners or submissives to me. I play privately with some of them, but that is only because they approach me, not because I solicit them. I am considered a polite pervert. I work to the comfort level of my model and only push their limits if they want them pushed.

Muses..... Yea, Idelsy.... I can't take a bad picture of her. Lady Lexi is another. Too many good shots of both of them. (Some are included in my fetish gallery)

EZ: You shoot a lot of fetish and bondage events. As a photographer, do you feel more like a spectator or a participant in them?

L: Good question! I'm a voyeur, so just by shooting the activities I am a participant. I also always have my rope with me, so I do get involved if asked. [smile] Whenever I have a gallery opening, I also try to have a little rope session to make the event interactive.

EZ: What is Kirinawa?

L: The direct translation from Japanese is "Rope cut for a certain purpose." I really like the way it sounds and what it stands for.

EZ: What's next for you?

L: Well I am working on getting my art into more brick and mortar galleries as well as two book projects. If anyone would like to help me in any way, please drop me a line! Models, gallery owners, book publishers, photographers who want me to rig for them as well as anyone who needs a rope instructor or photographer. Shameless plug, I know…
