New York Featured Event

The New School for Social Research, in conjunction with Terry Williams as part of his Sex in the City series, is hosting a preview screening of Femme Chocolate's premiere release, Afrodite Superstar. The film is billed as "a seductive, romantic comedy about Afrodite, a naive debutant who makes a secret Clark Kent-style transformation into a sexy rapper." Simone Valentino stars as AfroDite, with supporting roles for India, Mr. Marcus, Justin Long, Sativa Verte, Jay Junker, Liliana Velasquez, Trina Asiedu and Marcus Spencer.

The movie was created by director Venus Hottentot, as a tool for the empowerment of women of color and will be the first film release by Femme Chocolate, a new branch of Candida Royalle's Femme Productions line.

As with all of Femme's releases, AfroDite Superstar provides fresh and unexpected erotic content with a meaningful plot that the producers hope will tastefully serve the erotic needs of women of color. "This is the first ethnically diverse feature to come out under Femme Chocolate, a new division of my Femme Productions," Candida tells us. While Royalle is known and internationally acclaimed for having pioneered the concept of female-sensitive adult movies for couples, with Femme Chocolate she seeks to address the much neglected audience of ethnically diverse couples. She serves as Executive Director of the film and was at the helm for the direction of the sex scenes.

Director Venus Hottentot is a recent art school grad who made a number of short art films before directing AfroDite Superstar. As an African American filmmaker, her objective is reclaiming the sexual voice and expression of women of color. She joins Larry Clark and Matthew Barney (Destricted), John Cameron Mitchell (Shortbus), and Michael Winterbottom (9 Songs) as filmmakers seeking to make intelligent mainstream work with explicit sexual content. "I don't think all sexual content is pornographic," Hottentot said in an interview recently. "In fact, I prefer the term sex film, as it seems more direct and less dated to me than either term." She continues, "Pornography to me signifies exploitation. Our film is a very positive sexy enterprise made by women for women with a strong message." She and Candida found each other through candidaroyalle.com, where Ms. Royalle was conducting an online search for young female filmmakers. Looks like a match made in female erotica heaven!

There will be a Wine & Cheese Reception at 7pm followed by a screening of the movie at 8pm. And guests are invited to stick around afterward for a Q&A discussion with the creators of the film: Femme Productions' Candida Royalle, producer Natasha Cortes and Venus Hottentot along with the star of the film, Simone Valentino.

PLEASE NOTE: The film AfroDite Superstar contains real, un-reinacted explicit sex and sexual acts, and only those who can show ID to prove that they are over 18 will be admitted. This is an art film being shown in a university setting. If you are in any way offended by sex or sexuality, please do not attend. The filmmakers and related parties take no responsibility for your responses or reactions.
